Kalottspel is an annual summercamp for youths from the Barents Region, where the participants through dance and music are to improve contact across the borders. The festival Kalottspel has been arranged yearly since 1970, and will in 2008 take place August 5.- 10. in Målselv in Tromsø. The festival organizes courses in traditional dance and music for both children and adults.
In 2007 youths from the Barents Region were invited to participate in Kalottspel. The Kalottspel festival aims to recruit people to folk music and folkdance in the Barents Region, and be a central meetingspot for inhabitants in the Region.
BarentsUngdom
The festival offers courses to youths from 12-20 years old, and one of the main aims is to gather youths in the Barents Region to establish social contact between them. The participants are handpicked in their respective native countries. This year the festival invited 40 youths from the Barents Region, half of them Norwegian. The youths will be divided into groups in fiddle, dance and vocal, but they will also join common groups, because of the focus on social aspects of the festival. In addition there will be several concerts for the youths to join. Friday afternoon are the youths going to show what they have learned during the course, in a final concert.
The organization BarentsUngdom is aiming at self-development and inspiration for the youths, and while doing this, increase the participants social contacts with the other youths of the Barents Region. Kalottspel and BarentsUNgdom are financially supported be the Norwegian Barents Secretariat.
